Quick start

Your SourceMedium dashboard is built in Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio).

Use the page selector

Click the page dropdown (top left) or the navigation menu to switch between modules.

Set the date range

Use the date range picker (top right) to change the reporting period. It applies to every chart on the page, and each page opens with its own default date range.

Apply filters

Filter by channel, store, product, and other dimensions using the dropdown controls.

Hover for details

Hover over a chart to see exact values.
The dashboard’s own controls (date range, channel filter, drill up and down, optional metrics, export, and reset) are described in Core Dashboard Features. For a general introduction to Looker Studio, see Google’s quick-start guide.

View vs. Edit mode

View mode (the default) lets you use filters and controls and hover for details. You cannot change the dashboard itself. Edit mode lets you change charts, add visualizations, and change data sources and calculations. It requires Editor permission.
Changes made in Edit mode affect everyone who views the dashboard. To experiment, make a copy first: File > Make a copy.

Credential modes

A Looker Studio data source uses one of two credential modes to read data. Knowing which one is in use helps when a dashboard shows no data. Owner’s credentials (recommended): the dashboard reads data with the owner’s BigQuery permissions. Viewers see data without needing their own BigQuery access. Best for sharing dashboards broadly within your organization. Viewer’s credentials: each viewer needs their own BigQuery access and sees only the data they have permission to read. Best for dashboards with sensitive data that needs row-level security.
SourceMedium dashboards typically use Owner’s credentials so your team can view data without individual BigQuery access.

  1. Click Share (top right)
  2. Enter email addresses or a Google Group email
  3. Choose a permission level

Share a data source

Data source access is separate from report access:
  • Viewer: can see field names and descriptions
  • Editor: can rename fields, edit calculated fields, and change the connection
  • Owner: can delete the data source and change ownership

Data source access is not the same as data credentials. Access controls who can change the data source configuration; credentials control who can see the underlying data.

Use Google Groups

For teams with five or more users, manage access with Google Groups. We recommend two groups: Warehouse access is not part of this. It follows your SourceMedium workspace role, so invite people from Team instead.

Troubleshooting

Check these in order:
  1. Date range filter: is it set to a period with data?
  2. Other filters: are they excluding all data?
  3. Data source credentials: do they have BigQuery access?
  4. Contact SourceMedium support if the problem persists
Large date ranges and complex calculations slow performance. Try:
  • Reducing the date range
  • Using pre-aggregated metrics when available
  • Removing charts you do not need from the page
You need Editor permission. Contact the dashboard owner or admin.
  • Confirm you have Editor permission
  • Check your internet connection
  • Refresh and re-enter Edit mode
In Edit mode:
  1. Click the filter control
  2. Open Properties > Filter applied to
  3. Make sure the relevant charts are selected
  • Confirm you have data source Viewer or Editor access
  • Check that the data credentials match your BigQuery permissions
  • Permission changes can take time to propagate. Sign out and back in
