# Data retention and deletion

> When SourceMedium deletes data after you pause or disconnect a data source, or your organization leaves SourceMedium, and how to keep it.

Pausing or disconnecting a data source stops syncing. It does not delete data right away: data already synced stays in your reports until its deletion starts, and you can keep it by restoring the data source before then.

| What happens | Scheduled for deletion | Deletion starts |
| - | - | - |
| You pause a data source | After 60 days paused | 14 days later |
| The platform keeps refusing a data source's credentials and nobody reconnects it | After 60 days | 14 days later |
| You disconnect a data source | Right away | 14 days after you disconnect it |
| You uninstall the SourceMedium Shopify app | Right away | 14 days after the uninstall |
| Your organization's workspace is paused | After 60 days paused | 30 days later |
| Your organization is offboarded | At offboarding | 30 days after offboarding |

Deletion completes within 10 days of its start. Deleted data can then remain in backups and our cloud provider's recovery storage for up to 30 more days before it is erased.

A legal hold can delay a deletion that has not started.

## Which data this covers

This schedule covers the data SourceMedium collects through its own connectors. When it applies to a data source, we email your organization's admins the date its deletion starts.

Some data reaches SourceMedium another way: a vendor sends it to us, or a partner syncs it for us. To have that data deleted, [contact support](/docs/product-tours/get-support).

## Pausing a data source

Pausing stops syncing. SourceMedium keeps the credentials, and data already synced stays in your reports. From the day you pause it, the data source shows as **Paused**, with the date its deletion starts.

If it stays paused for 60 days, it is scheduled for deletion, and its deletion starts 14 days later. We email your organization's admins:

* on day 30 of the pause
* on day 53 of the pause
* when the data source is scheduled for deletion, with the date its deletion starts
* 3 days before its deletion starts

## When a data source's credentials stop working

A data source shows as **Needs reconnection** when SourceMedium cannot use its credentials, or its setup was not finished.

One case starts the deletion clock: the platform refuses the saved credentials, and reconnecting is the only fix. If nobody reconnects the data source for 60 days, it is scheduled for deletion, and its deletion starts 14 days later. We send the same emails as for a pause. Unfinished setup never starts the clock.

## Disconnecting a data source or uninstalling the Shopify app

Disconnecting a data source, or uninstalling the SourceMedium Shopify app, stops syncing immediately, and the data source is scheduled for deletion. Data already synced stays in your reports until its deletion starts, 14 days later.

A disconnected data source no longer appears in your list of data sources. The confirmation you see when you disconnect it gives the date its deletion starts. We also email your organization's admins when it is scheduled for deletion, and 3 days before its deletion starts.

## Pausing your organization's workspace

If your organization's SourceMedium workspace stays paused for 60 days, the data SourceMedium holds for it is scheduled for deletion, and its deletion starts 30 days later. We email your organization's admins on day 30 and day 53 of the pause, when the data is scheduled for deletion, and 3 days before its deletion starts.

## Keeping your data

Restore the data source, or the workspace, before its deletion starts. That returns it to active and cancels the deletion. Once deletion has started, it cannot be cancelled.

* **Paused data source:** resume the data source. No re-authentication is needed.
* **Credentials not working, disconnected, or Shopify app uninstalled:** reconnect the data source. See [Reconnect a data source](/docs/product-tours/reconnect-data-source).
* **Paused workspace:** resume the workspace.

## When your organization is offboarded

When your organization is offboarded, its warehouse datasets, and its dedicated Google Cloud project if it has one, are deleted at offboarding. Deletion of the rest of the data SourceMedium holds for it starts 30 days after offboarding.

Ask for any data export you need before your organization is offboarded.

## Reconnecting after deletion

Reconnecting a data source after its data is deleted starts a new connection. SourceMedium can only collect history the platform still provides, and some platforms limit it. For example, AppLovin provides 90 days of history, Reddit Ads 24 months, and Meta Ads 37 months. Older data from those platforms cannot be collected again.

## Data outside SourceMedium

Data already delivered into a warehouse you own, or into a tool you connected, is managed by you or by that tool's provider.
